Kodiak (4) 2011

Kodiak (3) 2011

We had a great time in Kodiak. Looking down on the town were these wind turbans. We had a great time exploring and nabbing some great pictures on the top of the mountain. Our first full day was cloudy, overcast, and light rain. But it just gave us a reason to explore in the car. We drove to the other side of the mountain and explored the beaches and Launch complex (pictures in next post). We also explored a beach and into the woods. Of course with this being Alaska and in Kodiak nonetheless, Paul brought "protection". The mossy forest floor is in the rain forest part of the island. It was beautiful. Cold, but beautiful!! Would you believe that we did not see any bears??

This is the ship the Alaska State Troopers use.

This SAGA ship is in the Alaska show: Deadliest Catch

random pictures 2011

Our friend Renee took this picture. I think it really is a great picture even if it is of an outhouse. In some areas, these are still used. Newer models of course.

This is a cache. People in the bush use them as a "pantry" of sort. They store food in it, away from hungry and curious animals.

This was taken from our driveway. They have been in the woods across the street from our house.

9-2011 Kodiak trip

This is the ship that we took on a 12 hour ferry ride to Kodiak from Homer. We had to drive to Homer at 700 in the morning, to check in for the ferry at 830. The ferry left port at 1030. There were not to many passengers on the ship. So of course, we had quite the digs. We had a 4 berth cabin with a bath. My sister was with us helping to entertain the kids. She is the craft queen! They had art work and jewelry to show off. There was a small movie room, cafe, lounge, bar, observation deck, and a solarium. Even for a long trip, we enjoyed the scenery and thewhale watching was amazing. We left on Saturday morning and left 530 on Monday night. The ferry comes and goes on a schedule so we had to plan around that. It was a quick trip, but we saw a lot and had a great time.
